A Message from Charmane Higgins
Dear TBC Community,
I wanted to reach out to you with a message of wellness and hope as we face this public health crisis alone, but together. First and foremost, we hope that you and your families are safe and faring well. We offer you resource information here and welcome any support that you feel we may be able to provide you or your families in the weeks ahead.
Like you, we are grappling with the immediate impact of COVID-19 on our team, constituents we serve, and our philanthropic community. We are learning and understanding their individual and collective needs as we try to determine how best to support them during these uncertain times. We are adapting to this unprecedented situation with all the support we can offer to the 1,000+ young people and the many youth-serving organizations with whom we partner.
We continue to stay on top of developments with COVID-19 and updated guidance from city, state, and federal authorities. Our work looks and feels different today than it did just last week. While much of our lives may have slowed down as we practice social distancing, our mission and program needs continue.
What does that mean for Trinity Boston Connects right now?
We have been working to balance our operations as we continue to serve our young people and adults while also protecting the well-being and health of our staff by working remotely using virtual platforms. We are continually evolving and developing creative ways to stay connected, determine needs, and provide support. In working toward our goal of helping our young people and youth workers feel safe and supported while staying active, we are continuing to provide services and access to clinical and basic needs resources, emotional support, and problem solving. Here are several specific examples from each of our five programs:
- Our embedded clinical support program staff at the McCormack Middle School are exploring the use of teletherapy to provide participating students with ongoing clinical services. They are ensuring students receive a Boston Public School-provided chrome book, while also having access to academic supports like a ‘virtual study hall.’ The team continues to support the mental health needs of teachers and connect families to basic needs resources.
- Our TBC Counseling Center staff are connecting with their youth worker clients via TeleHealth clinical sessions. With the Department of Youth Services on lockdown, the staff is working with DYS administration on how best to support youth in their custody.
- In-person programming in TEEP has been paused due to BPS closure. However, staff are creatively using social media to connect with students and families. “TEEP Live” Instagram Sunday sessions have become very popular.
- While Sole Train’s weekly running practices are suspended due to BPS school closure, Saturday half-marathon training runs continue even as staff welcome a new part-time coordinator.
- OEP’s program offerings are being conducted via Zoom. A RELLC Senior Leadership Workshop, part of a 10-month program, was successfully held as planned, using Zoom breakout rooms. Similarly, staff from 90 youth serving organizations across Boston continued their learning in a quarterly Racial Equity Learning Circle on White Supremacy Culture.
How can we help one another right now?
We can rally together to continue this important work for our city’s youth. But we need your financial support now more than ever to sustain operations in the first half of this fiscal year. These are extraordinary times where xenophobia, racism, and acute loneliness are on the rise. Trinity Boston Connects mission is more important now than ever.
As most of you have learned already, we will hold our Bostonians for Youth gala on on October 14th. Yet, we still ask our generous contributors to support our youth, partner organizations, and staff via sponsorship, ticket, and donation commitments as if the event had been held as originally planned.
You can give below or contact Daisy Guzman. Thank you!
We invite you to send us an email and share your ideas about how we can support our community of students, families, and organizations we serve, over the weeks and months ahead. Trinity Boston Connects will do what we can to address these needs or facilitate connections to resources as they become available. We know that as a nation, city, and community we will survive and thrive in new and different ways after this pandemic.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or to discuss your support of TBC at any time.
Be safe, be well, and stay connected,
Charmane Higgins
